More is more than just a job? The MZ generation became N-jobbers

*Source_Human Resources Development Service of Korea

These days, the number of MZ generation who call themselves ‘N-jobbers’ has increased.

Why do people who preach work-life balance jump into side hustles?

Let’s take a look at the very different job ecosystem for young people.

◇MZ office workers, 1 in 3 currently have a side job

The modifier ‘office worker by day, YouTuber and video editor by night’ is not awkward. Two jobs is a thing of the past, and it has been a long time since even ‘N-jobbers’, people with multiple jobs, appeared. This phenomenon is especially noticeable among the MZ generation, who do not define themselves with just one word. In fact, according to Deloitte Korea Group, 26% of millennials (hereinafter referred to as Generation M) and 34% of Generation Z have worked a side job (based on a survey of 501 members of Generation M in Korea). One in three Korean MZ office workers has experience living as an N-jobber.

Why do people who value work-life balance and leisure time after work more than anyone else waste their precious time trying to make another profit? To find the reason, we need to look at the biggest interests of the MZ generation. In the same survey, about half of the 501 Korean MZ generation chose ‘worry about living expenses’ as their biggest concern. The responses of overseas young people are also similar. High inflation, economic recession, and low income levels amplified the concerns of the MZ generation around the world about the cost of living and naturally led them to side jobs. Of course, there are some cases where people become job seekers for hobbies, self-improvement, or to expand their human network.

◇Various colors! The world of N-jobs

So what are the most popular side jobs these days? Here, the responses of Generation M and Generation Z were different. The most common side job activities for Generation Z, the generation born between the mid-1990s and early 2000s, were ‘operating or consulting a personal business (21%)’ and ‘working at a restaurant or retail store (21%).’ On the other hand, among Generation M, born after the early 1980s, the percentage of ‘gig workers’ (29%), who earn money through food delivery or ride-sharing apps, was the highest.

Meanwhile, preferred N jobs appeared across a wider range of fields. In a survey conducted by Rich & Co. on 500 office workers in their 20s and 30s living in the domestic metropolitan area, the most popular side jobs were ‘social creators (46%),’ ‘online/offline sales (41%),’ and ‘talent market (41%). followed by '36%)'. In particular, talent trading platforms such as Taling and Kmong are attracting a lot of attention from those who dream of becoming N-jobbers because of their accessibility.

It is certainly meaningful that the number of young people making new profits through N-jobs and investing in the future is increasing, but the economic hardships they face behind the scenes is a problem that should never be ignored. For this reason, it is clear that discovering the abilities and skills of young people and supporting their growth potential is an important task that cannot be postponed for our society.
