The Korean passport ranked second among the ‘world’s most influential passports.’ According to the passport index released by Britain's Henley & Partners last July, Korea can relatively easily enter 192 of 227 countries. The Henry Passport Index is an index calculated by adding up the number of countries that passport holders from a specific country can visit without a visa.
The country ranked first in terms of passport power was found to be Japan, which allows easy entry into 193 countries. Singapore then tied for second place with Korea, followed by Germany and Spain, which allow free travel to 190 destinations, in third place, and Finland, Italy, and Luxembourg, which allow visitors to 189 destinations without a visa, in fourth place.

The most essential item when traveling abroad is a passport. However, Koreans must be especially careful as their passports are often lost or stolen overseas. Lost passports can flow into the black market and be traded at high prices, and it is said that South Korean passports have been traded on the Chinese black market for around 10 million won in Korean currency already 10 years ago. This means that the value of the Korean passport is high. Why?
Why is the value of a Korean passport so high?
There are many reasons why the value of the Korean passport is highly regarded. First, the likelihood of Korean citizens staying abroad illegally is very low, and it is evaluated as helpful to the tourism industry of the countries visited. Another reason why many countries welcome Korean passport holders is that there is very little concern about negative political or diplomatic influence in the visiting country.
For this reason, a Korean passport allows you to visit almost any country in the world without a visa or with a visa on arrival for a short stay, so there is no need to obtain a visa in advance. Here, a ‘visa’ is a type of permit granted by the government of the country you are planning to visit, and is also called a ‘visa.’ In other words, being able to visit a country without a visa or with a visa on arrival means that you can visit the country at any time without having to obtain separate permission, which means that the reliability of your Korean passport is high.
‘Henry Passport Index’, which evaluates the value of passports
The passport power index published by Henry & Partners, a British international exchange specialist, is commonly called the ‘Henry Passport Index’. The Henry Passport Index has been regularly publishing the world's best passports for travel since 2006. The criteria is the number of countries to which you can travel without a prior visa, calculated based on proprietary data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). At this time, there are conditions that are reflected in the passport index screening. It is based on the fact that the passport holder is an adult, the purpose of entry is tourism or business, the period of stay is at least 3 days, and the passport is not a diplomatic passport but an ordinary passport.
Last January, Henry & Partners announced the ‘2023 First Quarter Passport Power Index’. There are as many as 192 countries that you can enter without a prior visa with a Korean passport. This number ranks second in the world, along with Singapore, and the first place is Japan, which allows entry to 193 countries without a prior visa with a Japanese passport. According to this announcement, only 6% of the world's passports allow visa-free entry to more than 70% of the world's economic zones. You can realize how great it is to be ranked 2nd in the world on the Henry Passport Index.
