For a moment, what does ‘MZ Generation’ mean?

*‘MZ Generation’ [Naver Knowledge Encyclopedia] MZ Generation (Dictionary of Current Affairs, PMG Knowledge Engine Research Institute)

This refers to the millennial generation, born between the early 1980s and early 2000s, and the Generation Z, born between the mid-1990s and early 2000s. They are familiar with the digital environment and are characterized by the pursuit of the latest trends and unique experiences that are different from others.
However, there are differences in the standards for dividing generations. Some view the Millennial generation as the generation born between 1980 and 1995, and Generation Z as the generation born between 1996 and 2000.
The MZ generation, who is familiar with the digital environment, uses mobile phones first and pursues the latest trends and unique experiences that are different from others. In particular, the MZ generation is emerging as a consumer entity that exerts strong influence in the distribution market based on SNS.

The MZ generation shows consumption characteristics that emphasize individual happiness rather than group, sharing (using rental or second-hand markets) rather than ownership, and experiences rather than products. They do not stop at simply purchasing items, but also purchase items with social value or special messages. People also engage in 'mining out' consumption to express their beliefs by purchasing. Additionally, this generation has a tendency to value the present rather than the future and tastes rather than prices, so they are more familiar with the 'flex' culture and luxury product consumption than other generations.

Then what about Generation Z?!

Demographers generally classify those born in the mid/late 1990s to the early 2010s as Generation Z. In general, the generation that spent their teenage years in the early 2010s when smartphones began to be widely distributed, or the generation that was exposed to the smartphone era in childhood and had little experience in the pre-smartphone era, is classified as Generation Z.

Generation naturally exposed to the Internet
Compared to other generations, they feel familiar with IT technology, freely use smartphones and SNS in social life, and have some experience with digital markets and analog media before the spread of smartphones, but during preschool or school. Due to the spread of smartphones from the time they entered school, they are not as familiar with them as previous generations. They are much more familiar with smartphones and have a strong desire to express their individuality and share their inclinations with others using SNS. Native (digital native), a generation that performs the roles of both a consumer and a producer of culture significantly compared to other generations.

A generation that prefers individualism
They are active in voicing their voices on social issues such as discrimination, polarization, and inequality, and are tolerant of issues such as gender identity, race, and nationality, and value the environmental value of companies. They are interested in social issues and lead to action, but there are practical benefits. A generation that is reluctant to form alliances and groups with others, believes that childbirth and marriage are individual freedoms, and is reluctant to burden others with life, preferring singleness.
A generation that values the present more than the future

As they grew up in the economic boom of the 1990s and at the same time watched their parents' Generation At the center of the 'my money, my own' trend, where money is spent lavishly on things, the 'Yolo people' and 'Kapoors' spend for present happiness rather than saving for their own uncertain future due to deprivation caused by society such as youth unemployment and the gap between rich and poor. A new type of generation that spends money to decorate themselves and to compensate for themselves.

세대 (世代, Generation)

Since ancient times, the period between the birth of a human being and the birth of a child has been set at approximately 30 years. (Although it is much delayed these days.) Anyway, for this reason, in the dictionary, one generation means a cycle of approximately 30 years. But what is the actual generation division these days? Nowadays, generational classification is determined differently for each country, person, and organization. The world is changing so rapidly that the 30-year cycle is not called a generation, but is given the name ‘Generation OO’ depending on a specific social phenomenon. As can be seen with a quick Internet search, the years defined by each generation in various media are slightly different.

A 3-line summary for busy people!

The Jalpa Generation is a new term that combines the 'Generation Z', born between 1995 and 2009, and the 'Alpha Generation', born after 2010. Because both Generation Z and Generation Alpha have lived in a digital environment, they have characteristics that distinguish them from the millennial generation. In particular, the Alpha Generation is emerging as the generation that will lead IT/consumption trends in the future, and the term 'Jalpa Generation' is attracting attention.

The Jalpa Generation is a new term that combines the ‘Generation Z’, born between 1995 and 2009, and the ‘Alpha Generation’, born after 2010. It refers to an age group younger than Generation MZ, which collectively refers to Millennials and Generation Z.

Using the term ‘Jalpa Generation’ has the advantage of clearly distinguishing them from the millennial generation, who were born in an analog environment and have gradually become accustomed to a digital environment. Because both Generation Z and Generation Alpha have lived in a digital environment since birth, their typical characteristic is that they are more receptive to the latest technology than any other generation. At the same time, it is also worth noting that those born and raised in an era of low birth rates have a strong sense of self-centeredness, monopolizing the affection and attention of their families during their growth process.
